Dealing with the uneven tang was a PITA. I don't have a belt sander that can proper flatten this much steel. Said fuck it, etched and did a wrap. Jute covered with buffalo hide and then braided sinew. Still too big of a handle. Cut everything off. Will hit the grinder and try again tomorrow.

Took me a while ,but finally got this done. Decided to put Elder Futhark runes on it to give it a touch of viking. I burned the runes into the handle, but I should have rubbed some wax into them. When I spread some polyurethane stain and finish on it it filled in the burns and turned them brown. I may go over it and remove the finish from the runes later. It takes a good edge,so my time wasn't a complete waste. My apologies for my non-existent photographic skills...

Would a large 14" bladed bowie knife be too large for every day carry do you think? A friend of mine makes blades as a hobby in his forge. I told him I want him to make a large bowie blade for me and the pattern or style I chose is the Shiva Ki "fightin' bowie". I have always carried a knife of some sort for SD for many years. This Shiva Ki bowie for me was the perfect knife for sd and other tasks. I plan on this style in 5160. Damascus would be nice but $ is the limitation.
What thinks you of this blade? Practical for carry or too big? Sorry but I cannot pst a photograph as our chain of command has seen fit to bar many internet sites including image hosting sites. Just type in Shiva Ki fightin' bowie and you will see the image.

Guys, I have been thinking of making a machete similar to or buying a Parang Langgi Tinggang from Valiant if ever I find one actually available. Valiant is not as bad as Swamp Rat in terms of being out of stock but pretty close for the more popular models.
Anyway, making one from 5160 or having one made for me is the idea. I want a blade that is multi-functional; it can be a multi too of the bush and also be used in SD if I am allowed to say that here. I have a quite a few firearms but am cognizant of the fact that a blade is the most practical tool available to man for all needs.
What do you think of my choice? I want something capable of doing some chopping, detail work as well as sd. I can get an axe and I already have a Nepalese kukri but I want a long bladed parang. Is this the best "multi-tool" for my needs?
(I am also asking an army budy to make me a bowie but more of that in different thread.)

I made this knife a while back;

But just now got around to making some pants for it. :slap:

The clip is designed to grab your belt, with the sheath thrust between belt and waistband on the left side of your body at about 10:00. That makes the handle available to left or right hand draws.

The back panel is double ply; full welt, braided natural sinew stitching, copper rivets. Dark brown dye with some light texturing on the clip panel.

Should last forever! :)

Andy

Himalayan Imports has always been known for putting their own spin on Western historical designs. Some believe that's historically inaccurate; the truth is the kamis own spin on our old forms creates something new. In the world of design, that's always a quality to be sought.

Years ago I picked up a saatistal wood 12" Seax as a Deal of the Day (DOTD). Got another, in the prized "U.S.A. Antler" handle from then-moderator Nasty. :D Miss him. Wish he'd post here. Anyways, liked the seax; used it- a mighty stabber, but not the knife Saxon leader Vortigern used in the "Night of the Long Knives."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Night_o...28Arthurian%29

Mentioned to Yangdu a few months ago that I believed a 18" Seax would sell; I'd buy one. It took months. They lost some kamis, bunch of other holdups. Then they started appearing in the DOTD while I was overseas. :wg: Warthog here got a nice one in Neem. I emailed Yangdu; finally got one in saatistal wood.

Thought you might like a look at all three.

My "review": Some rough edges on the new one. :sadnana: Broken tip; wonder what it punctured in shipping. I ground on a mini-chisel tip; should be stronger now. Santosh made this one, IIRC. Sher made the antler; Kumar the wood 12"-ers. I will say I miss the old kamis but their work will stick around for a while.

The 18", visually looks a little large in the handle. But its balance is amazing! :tu: It feels lively; a chopper as well as a poker. Very "alive" in feel; you know what I mean, likely. It's a little sloppy in make, soldering shows on bolster, grip pins a little rough. The sheath is correct but not great; I've glued the tip and will sand it flush later.

It's time in the woods will come. More pix then.

The wood was extremely dry when I got it, so right now I have it soaking in BLO. What would you guys do to the wood after soaking to preserve it from drying out and cracking?

EDIT: I did some light chopping without any problems. The BLO seems to have done the trick. Its a utilitarian kukri for sure, so I won't mind scuffing it up a bit. The villager chakmak is also very useful, I ran it over the blade a few times after chopping just to tidy up the edge a bit. The cross hatching on it makes it feel like a file.
